Electrostatic Sensing and Electrochemistry with Single Carbon Nanotubes

Iddo HELLER natuurkundig ingenieur geboren te Rotterdam. Preface This thesis describes the research I did together with a number of people during my time in the molecular biophysics (MB) group at the TU Delft. This work would not have been possible without the invaluable help and support of a large number of people. In this preface I would like to give a flavor of what the time I spent in MB me...

Single Molecule Electrochemistry

By using specially constructed nanometer tips of sharpened Pt-Ir wire in a wax sheath, small numbers of molecules (1-10) can be trapped between the tip and a substrate. Repeated electron transfers of an electroactive molecule as it shuttles by diffusion between tip and substrate produce a current (∼0.6 pA/molecule) that can be used to detect the trapped molecules. The tip electrode size and sha...

The Electrochemistry of Gases : New Sensing Opportunities

Electrochemistry on gases originated in 1839 with Grove's "gaseous voltaic battery". Over 90 years later, Bacon built a demonstration fuel cell consisting of porous nickel electrodes. He is credited with creating a stable three phase reaction zone of electrode, gas, and electrolyte. Today's fuel cell electrodes are far more sophisticated and lend themselves to other important electrochemical pr...
